I thought that I would never get this right. I have been playing around with making baked beans from scratch for about a year now. I do believe that I have finally settled on a recipe that works and passes the taste test as well!
2 pounds dry navy beansRinse the beans and soak overnight in plenty of water.
Saute onions in butter over low heat until limp, but not browned.
Drain water from beans and place into crockpot. Add all other ingredients and stir well. Add water while stirring to cover beans.
Cook on high for 2 hours, then reduce to low and cook an additional 10-12 hours. Check and stir every 2 hours if possible, adding water as needed to keep beans moist.
